From Butterknife to Betterlife: Petticoat Lane

"A butterknife will do the trick."

That was  my dad’s motto. Growing up, the only “tool” in our house was my brother, Jordan. My dad used a butterknife for the most basic fixings- ie: light fixtures. Anything more novice than that, we had a team of specialists  for: Nanice (Janice- The Fairy Godmother) was our “go to” gal for  Christmas present assembly. Our colorful “handy man” Tim was both interior decorator and “man” of the house… it took months to get him over but once he came, he was met with a laundry list longer than my arm: knob on cupboard to be replaced, as per the norm- door knob on front door needs to be tightened… etc etc (you get the point). Then there is Don the appliance guy who surfices annually (if not more), JTP—John the Plumber. Hani, a client of  my dads, Bob the master carpenter, Jamie the car repair man, and the list goes on. My mom always said my dad had no desire after working long hours I the office to repair things: he’d rather have a root canal (typical Kim exaggeration). On one occasion, I can recall my dad asking Jarrett (who just turned 10!) if he could borrow the screw driver from his fisher price toy tool set……. Need I say more?? So many find it ironic that girly girl Mikaela can saw, drill, paint, distress, and build (YES! build.. furniture!)-- I thank Grandma LaPlante for all the puzzles as a kid.

My mother always had an eye for design and color and the little "rules" of decor and style. I have constantly felt I wasn't in the right place, but now in my workshoppe and boutique, I am right where I need to be. And I still feel like a prissy girly girl, but now I can build an extra shoe rack for my shopping addiction and fashionista ways!

Petticoat Lane Boutique is the name we finally decided on.

I guess you could say that I graduated from Butter knife to better life.
